"For me, working with My Emergency Doctor has been the perfect foil to the frustrations of the hospital. "The thought of doing medicine 'over the phone' did not appeal to me at all, initially. How would I examine the patient? How would I know if they were sick? But every one of us that has taken the leap soon realises that the specific information you gain from the hands-on examination plays almost no role in our main task as Emergency Physicians. Our role is not to make a definitive diagnosis but to decide how quickly the patient needs care. As FACEMs we know that you don’t have to touch an abdomen to diagnose peritonism [ask them to cough], you don’t have to measure a fever to know if a child is sick or well, and you don’t need to know whether the systolic BP is 180 or 200 to decide that the asymptomatic patient can stay home. Doing this job takes you back to good, honest medicine without the distraction of 'routine bloods', admission team decisions, 4-hour rules and bed block. You talk to one patient at a time and have the time to provide good care. Patients are so grateful to have specialist level care in their own home. The system has been designed by doctors so the workflow is smooth and organised. All I can recommend is that you give it a go and take the leap with us.
